- Mercilon is a combined oral contraceptive pill (‘the Pill’). You take it to prevent pregnancy. These hormones prevent an egg being released from your ovaries so you cannot get pregnant. Mercilon also makes the fluid (mucus) in your cervix thicker which makes it more difficult for sperm to enter the womb.
- How to use
- How to take Mercilon: Tablets must be taken in the order directed on the package every day at about the same time with some liquid as needed. One tablet is to be taken daily for 21 consecutive days. Each subsequent pack is started after a 7-day tablet-free interval, during which time a withdrawal bleed usually occurs. This usually starts on day 2-3 after the last tablet and may not have finished before the next pack is started.
- Precautions
- Contraindications: Combined hormonal contraceptives (CHCs) should not be used in the presence of any of the conditions listed below. Should any of the conditions appear for the first time during CHC use, the product should be stopped immediately.• Presence or risk of venous thromboembolism (VTE)
o Venous thromboembolism – current VTE (on anticoagulants) or history of (e.g. deep venous thrombosis [DVT] or pulmonary embolism [PE]).
o Known hereditary or acquired predisposition for venous thromboembolism, such as APC-resistance, (including Factor V Leiden), antithrombin-III-deficiency, protein C deficiency, protein S deficiency.
o Major surgery with prolonged immobilisation.
o A high risk of venous thromboembolism due to the presence of multiple risk factors.• Presence or risk of arterial thromboembolism (ATE)
o Arterial thromboembolism – current arterial thromboembolism, history of arterial thromboembolism (e.g. myocardial infarction) or prodromal condition (e.g. angina pectoris)

- Postinor-2 also known as P2 contains the active ingredient levonorgestrel. It is commonly known as the morning after pill, used only as an emergency contraceptive. It is used to prevent pregnancy when taken within 72 hours (3 days) of unprotected intercourse/sex. It is not used as a regular, long-term method of contraception. It reduce the chance of pregnancy in two ways: If taken before ovulation, it may delay the release of the egg or if taken after ovulation, it may interfere with the transport of eggs and sperm. Postinor-2 has an 85% chance of preventing pregnancy. If taken within 24 hours, there is a 95% chance of preventing pregnancy. If taken after 48-72 hours, there is a 58% chance. It is not known whether it is effective if taken more than 72 hours after unprotected intercourse. Products similar to Postinor-2 but from a different manufacturer include ECee2.
- How to use
- Take one 750 μg tablet as soon as possible (within 72 hours of unprotected intercourse); Take a second 750 μg tablet 12 hours after the first dose;If you vomit within 2 hours of taking a tablet,consult your doctor before taking another dose.
- Precautions
- Postinor-2 will not prevent you from catching any sexually transmitted diseases. Your next menstrual period is likely to arrive on time. However, it may be slightly early or late. If it is more than 1 week late, or if it is unusually light, perform a pregnancy test.If you do not have a menstrual period after 3 weeks of taking Postinor-2, you may be pregnant. Consult your doctor. You should not take Postinor-2 if you have unexplained vaginal bleeding, Breast cancer, Liver problems or hypersensitivity to any of its ingredients. Postinor-2 should not be used in pregnant women, or women suspected of being pregnant. If a pregnancy is suspected, the menstrual period is late, or the last menstrual period was abnormal in character and timing, pregnancy should be excluded with a pregnancy test or pelvic examination before taking the treatment. If pregnancy occurs after taking Postinor-2, an ectopic pregnancy is possible.
